Update from Meghan Buckwalter, our Exchange Student in Germany

Hey there!

Just wanted to give you a quick update on what I’ve been up to. As usual, I want to hear your news as well!

I went back to Austria a few weeks ago and got a couple more days of skiing in. I met this guy named Josef (he looks exactly like Heidi’s Grandfather) who has a hut up in the mountains. He keeps cows in the summer and then makes cheese and sells it to skiers in the winter. He gave me a tour of his cheese room and showed me how he made it, which was neat! After I got back, I went to Copenhagen and met my Dad who was working there. Its a cute city on the water and the Danes are the nicest people I’ve ever met. I visited the Queen’s palace and got to see the changing of the guard. A huge parade of soldiers, dressed similar to the English Royal Guard, complete with a marching band, march down the center of the street (causing huge traffic jams) every day.

My last exciting trip was to Paris. My mom and grandmom came to visit me and we went on a short trip to Paris. We had a great time, and I found a new favorite city. I climbed up the Eiffel Tower (but not quite to the top). At night, the whole city is lite up and it’s really, really beautiful.

Otherwise, I’ve been celebrating birthdays (host brother, Mom, and sister, host Grandma (Omi), and a few of my friends. Experiencing German birthday celebrations has been fun and entertaining. I had a dancing performance (scary!) and attended a ball afterwards. I went to see Macbeth in a fancy theater and experianced the Kölner carnival. Imagine - hundreds of thousands of drunk Germans in costumes crammed into tight, narrow streets that stretch for miles. Everybody is screaming and singing and dancing. I won’t say anymore, but it was definately an experiance I’ll never forget and one everyone should have at least once in their lifetime! I have to go bowling right now, but I love you all! Have a great day!

Meghan
