Club President’s Corner: Program Updates
September 20th, 2007 | by EvergreenRotary |Mark Vickstrom
President, Evergreen Rotary Club
Hello Rotarians!
Here’s what’s on tap for this Friday:
September 21: Kisii Hospital, Kenya
THE PROBLEM: Kisii hospital’s daily water supply is inadequate. Even when all systems are functioning properly, the hospital is still short 140,000 liters (37,000 gallons) each day. The existing water system is 30 years old and often breaks down for extended periods, leaving the hospital with only enough for essential services. The area has a high density of AIDS and malaria victims.
THE SOLUTION: With $45,650 in co-funding from RI, our district is building a pipeline from a nearby spring, along with a water purification system and an electricity upgrade. This will supply water to both the hospital and the community.
THE SPEAKERS:
Carol Carper. Carol is a member of the Conifer club and serves on the district water task force, the Africa task force and the health and hunger task force. Since retiring from the field of education, Carol has devoted much of her time to service through Rotary. She’ll talk about her work with the Kisii Hospital project and the Health and Hunger Medical Camps in Kenya.
George Amenya Oyeho. George, originally from Kenya but now a U.S. citizen, has a passion for helping developing world rural communities realize their potential through education, health and food security programs. He worked with Kenya Armed Forces for about twenty five years and was also active there in Rotary. Now George belongs to the Rotary Club of Woodbury, Minnesota, and will join Carol in their upcoming trip to Kenya and the medical camps in January ‘08.
Thanks to Ruth Morehouse of the Conifer club for suggesting this program and to Barb Scripps for setting it up!
See you Friday,
Mark
