District Response to Colorado Disaster

June 4th, 2008 | by EvergreenRotary |

Many of you have inquired about ways to aid the tornado victims in Weld County, and below is our district’s response.

Here are my findings for the tornado disaster response for Gilcrest, Milliken, and Windsor as of today:

Rotarians wanting to donate or lend heavy equipment, generators, etc. or volunteer for clean up should call 2-1-1 on their telephones and talk to Weld County United Way. UW will take information on their name and donation and put them in contact with people on the ground that will call them back. The area around Windsor is still under “lockdown” and people are asked to not try to come into the area.

United Way of Weld County (all of the disaster areas are in Weld County) has established a Tornado Disaster Response Fund. To donate, contact United Way of Weld County by dialing 2-1-1 or visit the United Way Web site: www.unitedway-weld.org. Checks made payable to United Way of Weld County may be mailed to: UWWC/Tornado Fund, P.O. Box 1944, Greeley, CO 80632 or delivered to the United Way office, 814 9th St. in Greeley.

American Red Cross …Donate to the Centennial Chapter of the Red Cross at www.coloradoredcross.org and click on “supporting the Red Cross,” or call (970) 352-7212.

People also can drop off donations at the following Cache Bank & Trust locations: 4601 W. 20th St. and 924 11th St. in Greeley, 100 S. College Ave. in Fort Collins or 410 17th St. in Denver.

The Rotary Clubs in the areas affected are not organizing a separate fund drive at this time. They may have something for ongoing relief in the coming days or weeks and they will be informing us of any action as they get organized. I have not been able to reach anyone in the Windsor Club because of the lack of power and so many other things but I will continue to try. The Milliken area is working toward helping Windsor.

Here are a couple more areas where Evergreen Rotary can help:

Colorado Ag Disaster Fund: building materials, fencing supplies and other items are needed immediately. Call 303-749-7501 or send donations to Colorado Ag Disaster Fund, Weld County Colorado Tornado Fund, 9177 E. Mineral Circle, Centennial, CO 80122.

The Home Builders Association of Northern Colorado needs donations for its “Building the Future–Tornado Relief Fund” call 970-686-2798 or visit www.hbanco.co.

No used clothing right now. Donations will be accepted later.

Very Important: 100% of the money donated to the Weld County United Way and marked for Tornado Disaster Relief will go to the relief effort — they will take nothing out.

There is currently a need for the following volunteers:

  • General Contractors
  • Plumbers
  • Electricians
  • Hazard Materials handlers

Call “211″ to volunteer or donate.
